October 14, 2009: World Cup 2010 Qualifier, Group 7:

Rumania – Faroe Islands 3-1 (1-0)
1-0 Iulian Apostol 15’
2-0 Gheorghe Bucur 64’
2-1 Egil á Bø 82’
3-1 Ionut Mazilu 86’

Rumania took charge of the match immediately but failed to create real scoring opportunities in the first quarter of an hour however, but just as it looked like the Faroes had the situation under control, Iulian Apostol broke through the defense and from 10 metres he fired the ball into the back of the net between goalkeeper Jákup Mikkelsen and the near post.

Rumania almost doubled the lead with a replica just a minute later, but this time Mikkelsen was quick out of his goal to force the Rumanian to shoot into the sidenetting.

And on 23 minutes Mikkelsen, who played his 67th and final match for the Faroe Islands, made an outstanding save when he made a block with his legs to save from the clear Rumanian.

But 18 minutes through the second half there was little Mikkelsen could do to stop Gheorghe Bucur’s free header after a cross from the right.

Ten minutesd later Rumania’s left winger curled a clever pass in front of the Faroese defense, but neither of the two clear Rumanians connectet properly with the ball.

The Faroes had little to offer in going forward, but 8 minutes from end of normal time Súni Olsen knocked a freekick over the Rumanian defense to central defender Egil á Bø who was completely clear to head home.

The hope for an equalizer was short-lived however as Rumania restored their two-goal cushion four minutes later when a Rumanian dribbled into the penalty area and continued his run, but his weak shot shouldn’t have troubled Mikkelsen, but poor handling gave a rebound for an easy finish for Ionut Mazilu to cement the Rumanian win.
