Absence-hit Faroe Islands to face Romania

Several noticeable absents are in the Faroe Islands team which take on Romania on Sunday.

Especially midfield is hit hard as captain Fróði Benjaminsen has withdraw because of work commitments in his new job as a warder while Hallur Hansson is suspended. New inclusion is René Shaki Joensen who this season has played on HB Tórshavn’s midfield, but who has otherwise preferred the defensive positions.

Right back Jónas Tór Næs has withdrawn because a shoulder injury and his initial replacement Bárður Hansen later withdrew because of a hip injury. Jóhan Troest Davidsen is now likely to occupy the right back position.

Forward Arnbjørn Hansen has also withdrawn because of a thigh injury which paved the way for Andreas Lava Olsen.

The squad that travelled to Romania was this:

Goalkeepers: Gunnar Nielsen (no club), Teitur Gestsson (HB Tórshavn), Tórður Thomsen (B36 Tórshavn).

Defenders: Viljormur Davidsen (Vejle BK), Atli Gregersen (Víkingur), Ragnar Nattestad (Vejle BK), Odmar Færø (B36 Tórshavn), Jóhan Troest Davidsen (HB Tórshavn).

Midfielders: Gilli Sørensen (Aalborg BK), Pól Jóhannus Justinussen (NSÍ Runavík), Róaldur Jakobsen (B36 Tórshavn), Kaj Bartalsstovu (Levanger FK), Christian Lamhauge Holst (BK Fremad Amager), Brandur Olsen (FC København), Sølvi Vatnhamar (Víkingur), René Shaki Joensen (HB Tórshavn).

Transfer Window Closed

The transfer window closed on 16 March but the last day was prety undramatic.

Goalkeeper Kristian Joensen who has played in Denmark the last half year and who has been in contention for a place in the national squad, signed for 2nd tier 07 Vestur as he didn’t manage to find a foreign club to play for after parting with Lyngby.

Defender Rói Danielsen who has been studying in Denmark for the last year has returned to AB Argir where his strong performances earned him a place in the national squad at the end of the 2013 season. However, it will only be from May to September that Danielsen will be available for AB as he has time off from his studies this period.

Senegalese forward Ahmed Keita - a profile in the top flight a few years ago – has signed for 3rd tier team Giza/Hoyvík.

Goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen quits at Motherwell
Goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen, who has been in his second spell at Motherwell FC since the summer of 2013, has left the club "by mutual consent", as the club words it.

Nielsen made 23 starts for the club last season where Motherwell became runners up, but this season he had been confined to the bench although Motherwell has dropped to last in the table currently.

Additionally, Nielsen had been made only third in the pecking order after Motherwell had acquired  England U21 goalkeeper George Long on loan from Sheffield United until the end of the season.

Currently there is no news on where Nielsen’s future lies.
