October 02, 2005: Round 25 of the Formula 1st Division:

HB Tórshavns’s draw with
ÍF Fuglafjørður not catastrophic (for now, at least…)

ÍF Fuglafjørður - HB Tórshavn 1-1 (0-0)
0-1 Uni Arge 49'
1-1 Hanus Eliasen 81'

With a 1-1 draw away to ÍF Fuglafjørður, HB put the faith in their own hands, as they now will “only” have to beat KÍ Klaksvík and then B36 Tórshavn in the final match of the season in order to win the championship title. But the main reason for this wasn’t as much HB’s draw today, as it was that the title-rivals, B36 and Skála, also dropped crucial points today. B36 drew against KÍ Klaksvík and Skála surprisingly lost to TB Tvøroyri.

The first half between ÍF and HB was an uninspiring affair with few scoring opportunities. HB had maybe one good chance, and ÍF two or three, but neither side managed to score.

But only 3 minutes into the second half, HB broke the deadlock. After a HB corner, the ball went across the face of the goal, where Hallur Danielsen headed the ball back to Uni Arge in center of goal, who steered it in with the head for a 1-0 lead.

Halfway through the second half, ÍF started to put more and more pressure on HB’s defense and 10 minutes from time, ÍF were rewarded with a goal from Hanus Eliasen, when he beat the keeper with a good lob.

For the remaining 10 minutes, both teams searched for the winner, and ÍF frequently visited on the HB half, but weren’t able to create an opening and HB’s best opportunity was brilliantly saved by the ÍF goalkeeper.

As mentioned above, HB’s title contenders, B36 and Skála also slipped up today, and therefore HB’s draw was not catastrophic. Their task is now very simple, although very tough: If they win their 2 remaining games, they become champions! First match is at home against KÍ Klaksvík and then on the last they of the season, a thriller against B36 (providing they beat KÍ).

But on the other hand, if HB had won today, then a draw against B36 would be enough (providing they beat KÍ). So, how costly will today’s loss of points prove to be for HB…?

The other matches in round 25:

For the 7th time out of 25 matches this season, B36 failed to score a goal when their match against KÍ Klaksvík ended in goalless draw. B36 was in control throughout the match, but they just cannot score goals. On one hand, B36 will be bitterly disappointed about the result, but on the other hand, they will praise themselves lucky, that that HB and Skála didn’t win their matches. B36’s task is now just as simple as HB’s. If they win their 2 remaining games, the they are champions. The first is away against lowly GÍ Gøta and the last against HB Tórshavn.

Skála lost an important step in the title race when they lost away to TB Tvøroyri. This has made Skála chances of winning the title a lot slimmer. They will now have to beat EB/Streymur (away) in the next round, a very difficult task in itself, and then they will have to hope for a draw in the game between B36 and HB on the last game of the season. TB’s victory, on the other hand, was priceless, as they overtook VB Vágur and now have a very good chance of retaining their place in the top flight. As they are positioned now, no. 9, they will have to play against no. 2 in the second division for the place, but TB might avoid those playoff-games entirely, if they beat VB Vágur in the next round (and GÍ Gøta doesn’t win over B36 and Skála, which they should not).

VB Vágur were leading 2-0 over NSÍ Runavík at half time, but still lost the game and are now facing relegation as they were leapfrogged by TB. A disastrous result for VB, but they still have the chance to avoid relegation if they beat TB Tvøroyri (away) in the next round. It will be a frantic battle.

GÍ Gøta are in free fall and lost 5-1 to EB/Streymur. Red hot Sorin Anghel made a hat-trick for EB/Streymur. GÍ have now lost their last 5 games 5-19 and are now only 2 points away from the last spot on the table and direct relegation, and one point from the playoffs. Their best hope is probably to avoid direct relegation and then beat the second division team in the playoffs.
