September 25, 2005: Round 24 of the Formula 1st Division:

A Hans á Lag late winner keeps HB Tórshavn's title-hopes alive

HB Tórshavn - VB Vágur 2-1 (0-1)
0-1 Poul N. Poulsen 28'
1-1 Vagnur Mohr Mortensen 68' (pen)
2-1 Hans á Lag 90

HB Tórshavn were almost knocked out of the title race as they struggled to overcome VB Vágur, but a 90th minute winner from Hans á Lag gave HB the lifesaving 3 points.

Maybe HB had more of the possession in the first half, but they created practically no scoring opportunities. Neither did VB, but 28 minutes into the match, they suddenly put some great passes together and combined well through the HB defence and scored from close range.

In the second half HB improved just a little bit and were getting closer to the VB goal, but still had problems creating clear-cut chances. But midways through the second half, the referee judged a HB player to have been tripped in the penalty area and awarded HB a penalty. Vagnur Mohr Mortensen.

HB tried to press forward and as the defenders became more offensive, the defence became more vulnerable to VB’s counter attacks and VB nearly scored, but the powerful shot hit the left post and rebounded off to safety.

But then, in the 90th minute, HB got out of jail and made sure they are still part of the title race. HB made a cross from the right and Uni Arge headed the ball right to the feet of Hans á Lag who put the ball into the net for that all-important winning goal and the crucial 3 points.

As B36 won their difficult away match against EB/Streymur, HB will now probably have to win over B36 on the last game of the season if they are to retain their title. In addition to that, Skála also have to drop 3 points.

The other matches in round 24:

B36 visited EB/Streymur today, and the other two main championship contenders, HB and Skála, were hoping B36 would drop points and that was almost happening. B36 scored the opener, but EB/Streymur levelled the score early in the second half. But 5 minutes from time, B36 scored from a penalty and with the 3 points, B36 now head the table, as Skála’s match was postponed to Monday because of strong wind. This was the first time EB/Streymur lost at home this season and with their loss, their slim hopes of winning the title is now also over.

TB is not surrendering without a fight. Today they won against GÍ Gøta, and now they are suddenly in with a realistic chance of surviving. They “only” need win against VB in 2 weeks time ad hope that VB only get 1 point from their games against NSÍ and EB/Streymur. Then TB would become no. 9 and would be in the playoffs against no 2 in the second division. But if TB also beat ÍF on the last they, and GÍ only manage a draw in their last 3 (GÍ have a very tough schedule), then TB would also overtake GÍ and avoid the playoffs. If VB wins 1 match, and GÍ lose their last 3, then GÍ will be facing playoffs.

ÍF Fuglafjørður climbed to safety when they beat KÍ Klaksvík. Although KÍ is only 4 points from the 9th position and with a tough schedule in hand, they should be relatively safe.

Skála lost first spot on the table in a six-goal thriller away to NSÍ Runavík in today's postponed match. Skála came from a goal down to lead both 2-1 and 3-2 thanks to a Jónhard Frederiksberg hat-trick, but NSÍ levelled the score in the last minute of the match. Skála is now level with HB on points, 1 behind B36 Tórshavn on first spot, but Skála gets second place because they are better in the head-to-head matches with HB, and because of that, Skála must drop another point if HB wants to clinch the title. Of course B36 will also have to lose points if HB wants the title, but those two will meet in the last game of the season. Skála will meet EB/Streymur in the penultimate round, and drop of points in that match might very well cost Skála the championship.
