May 22 - May 23, 2005: Round 10 of the Formula 1st Division:

HB Tórshavn beat NSÍ Runavík
to go top once again

May 23:
HB Tórshavn - NSÍ Runavík 3-1 (2-0)

1-0 Hans á Lag '40
2-0 Rókur av Fløtum Jespersen '45
3-0 Jákup á Borg '71
3-1 Helgi L. petersen '80

The lead is changing often in the Formula 1st Division this season and today it was HB Tórshavn who reclaimed first spot, after a 3-1 win over NSÍ Runavík. HB and B36 Tórshavn both have 19 points, but HB is no. 1 because a superior goal difference. NSÍ Runavík and Skála are tied on third spot 3 points adrift of HB and B36.

HB Tórshavn almost made the perfect start against NSÌ Runavík in today’s top match.

After only 3 minutes HB's Svend Jacobsen was totally free and had only the onrushing keeper, Jens Martin Knudsen to beat, and Jens Martin was beaten all right, but the problem was that the shot went wide of the goal. That should have been 1-0 for HB.

HB (just about) looked the better side the first 25-30 minutes and should again have taken the lead when Jákup á Borg sent a perfect cross to an unmarked Hans á Lag who blasted the shot well over the crossbar from just 5 meters in front of goal.

Then NSÍ suddenly started to put some pressure on the HB defense, but could only produce half-chances however and never really threatened Bárður Johannesen in the HB goal.

But then suddenly HB scored two quick goals short before half time. Rókur av Fløtum Jespersen shot at the NSÍ goal, but he miss-hit the ball, which instead unintentionally became a perfect pass for Hans á Lag who just had to beat the bobble hat-keeper to put HB in front.

Just 4 minutes later HB made it 2-0. Jákup á Borg had the ball on the left and tried to play it between two NSÍ defenders, but he didn’t succeed… well, he shouldn’t have, but somehow, the NSÍ defender missed the ball and then Rókur á Fløtum Jespersen was suddenly free in the penalty area, and he had no problems beating Jens Martin Knudsen to give HB a 2-0 lead at half time.

HB was never in any danger of surrendering the lead, and after 71 minutes, Jákup á Borg was played through and he ran across the penalty area before he smashed the ball into the right upper corner of the net with his left leg.

NSÍ took one goal back about 10 minutes later. Christian Høgni Jacobsen was surrounded in the left hand side of the penalty area but was still allowed to cross the ball to a completely unmarked Helgi L. Petersen who easily scored. - A classic case of ball watching.

NSÍ nearly got a second when they were allowed to head the ball from close range, but Bárður Johannesen made a spectacular diving save. Apart from that, NSÍ had no real opportunities. Instead, HB had several good opportunities to increase the lead, but in the end, those missed chances didn’t matter.

With the victory, HB Tórshavn is now back on first spot, although with the same number of points as B36 Tórshavn, but HB have a better goal difference. HB’s performance today was one of the better for a long time and if they can keep it at this level, they might just snatch another league title…

The other matches in round 10:

For the second time in 11 days, B36 Tórshavn and Skála encountered each other to decide who should be no. 1 in the league, and just as last time, they drew again in today’s top match. The result was 2-2.

B36 Tórshavn playing Skála in Gundadalur Stadium. B36 in white - Skála in orange. Action here: B36 almost scoring after a free kick.

On this picture, B36 Tórshavn is almost scoring after a free kick. - B36 in white, Skála in orange. - The match was played in Gundadalur Stadium in Tórshavn

Skála got a flying start and scored already in the first minute, when Bjarni Jørgensen dribbled through the B36 defense and beat keeper Jákup Mikkelsen with a good shot. But 25 minutes later, B36 leveled the score from a free kick from Allan Mørkøre which brushed off the leg of Fróði Benjaminsen, who was credited for the goal. Allan Mørkøre then scored again in the second minute of the second half to give B36 the lead, but 12 minutes from time, Jónhard Frederiksberg showed his value when he equalized after some ping pong in front of the B36 goal. But either HB Tórshavn or NSÍ Runavík could claim the top spot from B36 tomorrow, if either manages to win.

GÍ Gøta got their only second victory of the season, when they visited VB Vágur in a very important match in the relegation zone. GÍ won 3-0; one of the goals was another Súni Olsen free kick-special. GÍ is now just 1 point behind VB, who are starting to see the red lights. VB’s next two matches will be against B36 Tórshavn and Skála, so VB could well find themselves at the bottom of the table after those matches. And it could become difficult to escape from that spot again…

KÍ Klaksvík seem to be back in business. Today they won 6-1 over TB Tvøroyri. Heðin á Lakjuni made a hattrick. KÍ got their first goal in the first minute, and from thereon it was always going to be difficult for TB, as TB’s game plan is primarily to prevent their opponents from scoring, with a solid defense.

ÍF Fuglafjørður was set to come out of their depression, when they were leading 2-0 against EB/Streymur at half time, but instead, they went into a deeper depression than ever, when EB/Streymur stole all 3 points 2 minutes into injury time.

Tomorrow HB Tórshavn and NSÍ Runavík will fight for the top spot in the Formula 1st Division. The winner will join B36 at 1st spot with 19 points. A draw will keep them tied at second place, 2 points behind B36.
