May 16, 2005: Round 9 of the Formula 1st Division:

HB Tórshavn and B36 Tórshavn play out a goalless draw in the local derby

B36 Tórshavn – HB Tórshavn 0-0

A better headline would probably be “Yawn, yawn and yawn”, because it was one of the most boring games between B36 Tórshavn and HB Tórshavn for many years.

Practically nothing happened in the match and 0 - 0 was probably a justified result, as neither team deserved to get a goal for the poor show they put on today. However, they got a point each, but I’m not sure either of them deserved that, though.

The match was supposed to be a match between the top teams in the Formula 1st Division, but there was not much evidence presented to support that. It was one of the most uneventful local derbies between these two sides for a long, long time; maybe the most uneventful ever.

Neither team created any chances that are worth reporting. B36 had more of the possession in the first half, but never really threatened the HB goal, except a couple of times maybe, when the goalkeeper failed to clear the ball after corner. HB on the other hand never put any pressure at all on the B36 goal.

The second half was just as monotonous as the first. B36 had one shot that Bárður Johannesen had to be alert to, plus maybe 1 or 2 half chances. HB also only created 1 or 2 half chances (or ¼ chances), but Jákup Mikkslsen in the B36 goal never had to make a save.

With this result, B36 is still on top of the table, 2 points in front of HB.

The other matches in round 9:

NSÍ Runavík won 1-0 over Skála in the other top match today. With that result, NSÍ is now level on points with HB in second place, 1 point ahead of Skála in 4th spot.

KÍ Klaksvik finally won again when they beat ÍF Fuglafjørður by 3 goals to 0. ÍF has now conceded 9 goals in 2 matches. Something indicates a wrong spirit at the moment.

TB Tvøroyri won yet again, this time 3-0 ower GÍ Gøta. With this victory, TB climbed all the way to 5th spot and all talk about relegation has been belied. GÍ, on the other hand, is living a dangerous and lonely life at the bottom of the table with only 4 points for 9 matches.

EB/Streymur scored from a free kick in the last minute in the math against VB Vágur to earn them a draw. Both EB/Streymur and VB Vágur are in troubled waters in 8th and 9th spot respectively.

All teams have now played against each other once (all teams play each team 3 times), and this should give us a clue about who will win the championship when the 27 rounds have been played.

However, that is a very difficult prediction to make. The winner could be any of B36 Tórshavn, HB Tórshavn, NSÍ Runavík and Skála. B36 Tórshavn is leading now, but only with 2 points down to HB and NSÍ, and another one down to Skála.

B36 are primarily on top because of a very solid defense. Otherwise, they have not been convincing. Neither has HB, neither in attack nor defense, but they are still in a very good position. It feels like if HB can improve just a little bit, they will have a very good chance of winning another championship. But NSÍ has come on very strongly over the latest matches and certainly is a very good bid for the trophy at this stage. Skála could also claim it, and when they are on song, they are the team that plays the most attractive soccer.

In the relegation battle (no. 10 are relegated, whereas no. 9 will play for the place against no. 8 in the 2nd division) GÍ is the team who is in immediate danger, but there are still 18 games left and a couple of wins can rapidly change that. But they can’t wait forever.

EB/Streymur and VB Vágur are probably going to struggle for the rest of the season, and I thought TB Tvøroyri would to, but so far, they have proved me wrong.

As this is the first time the season is played over 27 matches (it used to be 18), it is difficult to predict how much influence that will have on events. Will players become tired and will injuries and suspensions be an important factor? Only time will tell…
