October 01, 2006: Round 25 of the Formula Division:

HB Tórshavn beat VB/Sumba to cut EB/Streymur's lead in the table to only 2 points, as EB/Streymur lose to GÍ Gøta

EB/Streymur - GÍ Gøta 2-3 (1-2)
What has looked like a certain championship title for EB/Streymur for the last couple of weeks, has suddenly become a wide open title race again after EB/Streymur have only taken 1 point in their last two matches. Today they were shocked by GÍ's two opening goals after only 6 and 12 minutes. EB/Streymur reduced the score midway into the half with a Sorin Anghel goal. In the second half , GÍ played more defensively and thus gave EB/Streymur a lot of possession, and they also created several scoring opportunities, and in one incident, a GÍ defender saved on the line with his head. But GÍ were dangerous on the counter-attacks, and it was after a good EB/Streymur opportunity that GÍ broke, and a clear Erling Jacobsen could bring GÍ 3-1 up after 84 minutes. EB/Streyur immediately answered back with a good long range shot from substitute Jørgen Meitilberg, but GÍ held on to their lead and EB/Sreymur lost on home soil for the first time this season. EB/Streymur were hampered by central defender and captain Egil á Bø being suspended for the game and likewise the absence of midfielder Bárður Olsen through injury. Bárður will be back for the next game away to ÍF. He is very important for EB/Streymur's attacking play and that hasn't been the same since he went out injured in the game against Skála two weeks ago. But EB/Streymur can't afford to lose another game, because HB is waiting to snatch the title away from them, only 2 points adrift now. EB/Streymur's final two games are against ÍF (a) and KÍ Klaksvík (h).

HB Tórshavn - VB/Sumba 2-0 (0-0)
HB took full advantage of EB/Streymur's loss to GÍ by beating VB/Sumba 2-0.

VB/Sumba had come to Tórshavn to defend only and they did that quite well. HB found it difficult to break down VB/Sumba's compact defense and only managed to create a couple of half-chances. VB/Sumba had one or two counter-attacks that could have become dangerous, as VB/Sumba's Birgir Jørgensen is always ready for those, but however, Bárður Johannesen in the HB goal never had to make a save (Birgir Jørgensen has announced his retirement at the end of the season).

In the second half HB played a bit quicker and they created better scoring opportunities than in the first half and Rókur av Fløtum Jespersen had a good try early in the second half.

And it was the same Rókur who put HB in front on 52 minutes with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Substitute Tór-Ingar Akselsen used his speed to run from defenders and had a couple of finishes that went close and on 88 minutes, Jákup á Borg sent a perfect low cross from the right to a clear Tór-Ingar who had the easiest of tasks to put HB 2-0 up.

HB take on B68 next (14 days, as the Faroe Islands play Lithuania in a Euro qualifier on Saturday, October 17), and if HB get 3 points there, then the title will no be decided before the last day of the season, when HB play ÍF at home and EB/Streymur take on KÍ Klaksvík at home. Anything could happen there...

ÍF Fuglafjørður – B68 2-3 (1-1)
After beating ÍF 3-2 in the all-important bottom match, B68 have a very good chance of avoiding relegation from the Formula Division. Being 2 points in front of both ÍF and VB/Sumba, then either of those two will have to win a match (only 2 are left) in order to overtake B68, and that is not very likely, looking at their match schedule. ÍF play against EB/Streymur (h) and HB (a) and VB/Sumba play NSÍ (h) and Skála (a). But today's match etween ÍF and B68 was a thriller. B68 took an early lead with a goal from veteran striker Súni Fríði Barbá. Bur ÍF leveled halfway through the first half. 11 minutes into the second half, B68 took the lead again, but ÍF equalized almost immediately. But 8 minutes from the end, Súni Fríði's magic boot conjured up another goal for B68 and 3 points that might very well keep them in the division.

NSÍ Runavík – B36 Tórshavn 1-1 (0-0)
After a goalless first half, NSÍ took the lead midway into the second half and should have doubled their lead later when Christian Høgni Jacobsen was clear, but somehow he squandered the opportunity. It proved costly, as Sylla equalized for B36 late in the game. But B36 stay in third place, as KÍ were held to a draw against Skála.

KÍ Klaksvík – Skála 1-1 (0-0)
After a dull first half with no goals, the tempo was turned up a notch in the second, which produced more scoring opportunities. Skála took the lead 12 minutes from the end, but Heðin á Lakjuni equalized with a (very) long range effort at the death. KÍ would have moved up to 3rd, had they won. Earlier in the week, Skála announced their new coach for the next 2 seasons, Serb Dragan Kovacevic. He is currently coach at B71 Sandoy in the 1st division, whom he has guided to promotion to the Formula Division. In 2002 and 2005, Kovacevic was coach at VB (now VB/Sumba).
